Interesting Change in TN Law - Guns in Cars

Post by Tennessee Jed on Thu Jun 04, 2015 3:10 pm

As of July 1, the law in TN is taking an interesting turn for gun rights. In TN, "no guns" signs have the effect of law, so if an employer had a no guns policy, then having a gun in one's car in the parking lot was same as carrying in a prohibited zone.

That changed with a law that said carrying guns secured in a car in a parking lot was not a criminal offense. However, having a gun in a car in a parking lot of a prohibitive employer could still get you fired.

However, as of July 1, employers are not allowed to punish or terminate an employee who has a gun secured in their car in the parking lot. If an employer takes action against an employee, the law reads similarly to what happens if an employer discriminates against an employee for a currently protected class (race, gender, etc.).

This is going to lead to some interesting law suits for yokel employers who don't stay current on employment law. Dang, I love this state.
