    OK. So I'm in TROUBLE-O

Post by Devereaux on Thu Mar 20, 2014 12:48 am

Today my friend here in Evansville and I tool a road trip to - Lexington, KY. Our initial goal was to see Buds Gun Shop. It is currently called the Gun Warehouse, which caused a little difficulty finding the place, but otherwise, it was a good shop with lots of stuff. While the handgun selection was significant, not much of serious interest was there. But on the back wall there were several Springfield M14's in various formats, regular, synthetic stock, folding stock and weird handguards, tankers. There were also 2 FNH SCAR-17's. And a Tavor! I had never held on. It is light, but it CLEARLY need sights or optic as the bore line is a lot lower than your eye.

On to the second shop. Where we encountered a number of military weapons (Garand for $1750! Woof!), including an Aussie Enfield. Loads of Lugers, all in the $1600-3000 range. There was a case of high-end 1911's, with at least 2 Nighthawks, and 2 Ed Browns. And some other stuff. All kool. Nothing to jump up and BUY.

Now it's 5P local, and we have to decide whether to head home or check out one more. We opt for one more. Gack! There in the case is a 1923 civilian Luger, in fabulous shape, all numbers match, bore spotless. We haggled over the price. We talk about tax or no tax. We contemplate the shipping cost.

And I am now the proud owner of a DWM Luger in .30 Luger. Even got the salesman to give me a free box of 7.65 Luger ammo (must show just how much he made on the deal!). But I have always wanted one of these. To me there are the ultimate Luger, after such unobtainable stuff like an artillery or naval luger. By next week it should be up in Illinois and ready for pick-up.

Now how to tell my wife that I just spent a grand on yet another gun (which she thinks I don't need).

Yay! Cool, old guns! Congrats, Dev! 150mm barrel?

You know what you need to do: POST PICTURES when you can.

And give your wife a thou for the essential shoe and purse budget.

The barrel is standard length. I didn't think they made any longer ones for the civvies.

Yeah, I talked to my wife this morning. The phones have been down at the hotel, so we have not been able to speak, so I called from work. When I told her I spent the grand, she laughed and asked why I was telling her. I always just do what I want anyway. Hmmm. She obviously has a misconception of me.

But I have no doubt that she will find something she wants. Only I have been told to buy no more jewelry. She has "all she needs." I find the concept difficult to grasp. But there it is.

Meanwhile I HAVE curtailed my procurement of weaponry significantly. I have only bought myself the 227. Although I did buy my daughter a gun; neither she nor my wife know about that yet. Heh, heh!  Cool

BTW, ?anyone here a Luger expert. ?Or at least knowledgeable. I am interested in info on the magazines - what to look for, etc. The one item I did not check well.

    Magazines are a big problem.

A friend had his father's war-trophy Luger. We shot the wee out of it. Turns out it was a rare Naval Luger. Opps. It was very finicky about mags and ammo. My buddy was continuously in search of mags, which were expensive as hell; and this was several decades ago.

Triple K has 9mm/ .30 Cal Luger Magazines. Please note: years ago I tried Triple K mags in my Ruger RSP: they sucked. Triple K is still in business so they HAD to get better - right?

Do you have the Luger's stablemate: the Walther P38? I've got a P01, the updated Polizei variant. I have bought a metric buttload of Walther manufactured mags for it. And a monocle.

Never liked the P38. A friend has one, but I'm not particularly interested in them. Saw a bunch of them in Lexington.

Just one of the things I'm looking forward to when I get to St Louey: the Mom and Pop gun stores and pawn shops. California has pretty much driven them out of business. It'd be great to find a rare relic being offered for a song.

Or has the internet eliminated that hope?

I have lately noted in Blue Soviet State of Illinois an outcropping of gun stores. Not necessarily cheap, but way more than there once was. Some times you can get them down to a price that you are willing to accept. And if not, there's always GunBroker. But I have to say that it's nice to see the gun shops cropping up. And they seem to be doing a good business. Guess not everyone is as savvy on prices as the illustrious people on this forum (me excluded, of course - I just paid $1100 for a Luger).

Heck, TJ, I don't even know HOW to post a picture. Plus I haven't gotten the thing yet. And considering the waiting period, I probably won't get to it until next week. BUT if I DO manage to figure out how to post pictures, and when I DO get the thing, I will make a serious effort to get some pics up.

I have no idea how to turn off the waiting period
But I think you should be able to post a pic with the picture button above the entry field

    Windblows 7 desktop box.

I found No-Script was again blocking the smileys and editing buttons. So I added an exception for this website - again. Thanx.

Well, that worked, but they are ginormous! I did this from photobucket.

?How does one size them. ?Is there a better way to post the pics.

    BEAUTIFUL, Dev!!!

    Congratulations!  When's the range trip?

BTW: From what I remember of my friend's Naval Luger, they like to run very wet.

    Thank you, CF.

I need to get some more ammo, and I need to do a little more looking into dis assembly. I have looked at some pics of the process, and it's daunting! There are more parts in just one area than the whole 1911. I have gotten the top off the frame, but haven't gone about taking the bolt and toggle down yet. I kind of think that is minimum for going over this puppy.

I have noted that it appears to be properly lubed so far. And from what I read, ONE of the keys is to shoot HOT ammo; else the toggle doesn't like going up and down. Properly.

Well, found a y-tube video on taking down the Luger and reassembling it. SO I did that. It turned out to be relatively easy. It looks daunting, but while there are a lot of parts, it comes apart pretty straight forwardly, and I only had a little trouble getting it back together. It is in one piece again and works properly. Pretty clean on the inside, too.

Nope. I am trying to get a line on some ammo to stock up on. I want about 500 rounds to have enough to be able to reload a reasonable number of rounds. Right now I have ONE box of 50.
