Incoming AR Optic: Bushnell 1-4x PCL

Post by Tennessee Jed on Thu Aug 18, 2016 5:04 pm

Since you guys got me started down the AR path, thought I'd share my latest addition. I just ordered a Bushnell 1-4X PCL scope for my AR.

The scope is a 1 - 4x variable, with an illuminated reticle (which reticle has marks for bullet drop at 200, 300, etc. yards), and a lever to make it more easy to switch from 1x to 4x.

I originally planned to put yet another Bushnell TRS-25 red dot on this rifle, but learned that Palmetto State Armory was running a sale on the 1-4x scope for $150. I figured at that price I couldn't go too far wrong.

The downside is that it's a birthday present for me, so I won't get to shoot it until September. When I get it on and zero it in, I'll let you know what I think of it.

Got my birthday present early. I turn 70 end of October. But I just got a 2016 Corvette Z06 in Long Beach Red (kind of a maroon). Gorgeous car - and fast.

Holy frijoles! If I miss it later, happy birthday Dev!

Now, you know you need to share a picture of that crimson beast of yours.

In the upper left hand corner you can see my old C6. It was a vert.

Good Lord Almighty! That is one heck of a car you've got there!

Many congratulations. That is one outstanding piece of American hardware.

Thank you, gentlemen. I have been having a ball with it. Haven't been so excited over a car for at least 40 years. It is an absolute gas. Turns heads everywhere. Even in the church parking lot, as I was getting ready to leave there was a little kid about 8 car spaces down (all empty at that time) who was jumping up and down hollering, "Look at that car! Look at that car!" Unfortunately, I didn't hear that or I would have asked the mother if he could have a little ride. Would have made the 7 y/o's day.

TJ, you are absolutely right. This is American Iron at its best. I reminds me of the bad old days of late 60's/early 70's with all the muscle cars. This thing has an American V8 with FI, turns out 650 HP, and everything is integrated. So there are 5 driving types you dial up with the "magnetic ride" switch - track, sport, touring, economy, and weather. Each does things to the exhaust, power output, steering input, suspension, torque production and spring rates. You can make the rear wheels spin almost at will. It turns when you say, holds the corners, and just plain is FUN!

Oh, yeah. And all that while having your phone hooked up, the radio available for tuning by switch or voice, and navigation.

Got the scope installed last week and sighted it in over the weekend.

I don't have a lot of experience with scopes, just red dots, but WOW, I really like this scope.

I didn't have a lot of time to shoot after I got it locked in at 100 yards. Once sighted in, though, I was putting all the shots into about a 2 1/2 inch group. That will get a lot better with experience, but it sure was a great start.

The illuminated reticle is more handy than I would've thought. When shooting at a black bullseye, that red illumination makes a big difference.

All in all, I'm very pleased with the purchase so far. Couldn't beat the price.

Scopes are the saving grace of old eyes. Was a time I could hunt with open sights and see what I was shooting easily. No more. Now a scope seems essential.

I like red dots. But red dots are CQB type sights - good to maybe 100 or so yds. You get much beyond that you need to see. You can only do that with a scope.

My scopes are older, so no illuminated reticles. Now that seems the rage. Not sure just how that translates into a benefit, so enlighted us with your experience. You too, Corn - jump in there with your opinions.

The reticle on my scope is posted above.

For me, so far, the benefit of illumination has been the ability to more clearly see the reticle when shooting at a black or dark target where it's more difficult to otherwise see the reticle.

Additionally, the scope I got has what I believe is called "first focal plane." So, on 4x, I see the reticle as shown above. When I dial down to 1x, that reticle shrinks down to be essentially a dot with a circle over the top. Because the reticle is illuminated, that means I've got a red dot at 1x.

The manual says the holdover marks work for "standard" 5.56 55 grain and 62 grain loads.

I've not shot it past 100 yards yet, so I'm not sure if that's correct, but I am shooting primarily 55 grain bullets so maybe it will work.

My goal, since this is primarily an all-around defensive rifle, will be to learn where I hold for 25, 50, 100 (which will be the top dot) and 150 and 200 yards.

I am quite confident I'll likely never shoot past 200.

I could have just gone with a red dot, but I enjoy shooting at 100 yards at the range and wanted to be able to see the target better.

Scope dope:

Vortex Strike Eagle: 1-6x24. Seriously good kit, bright, crisp, 30mm tube. Illuminated reticle that is ground into the focal plane If the batteries go TU, you can still use the sight. Vortex guarantees everything but lost or stolen. It's on my 6.8 AR.

Vortex 2.5-10x32. Played with it at the Vortex booth at the NRA convention. Superior brightness and clarity. Superb scope. Going on my DMRish build - thankfully in the build phase now.

Leopold 1.25-4x24 Firedot: Combo scope and red dot. Seriously bright.  And its a Leupy. Going on my SPRish 18" build.

Getting these scopes for approximately 50% off MSRP.  Sometimes it pays to work in a gun shoppe.
