Government Waste

Post by Devereaux on Tue Apr 29, 2014 10:37 pm

Here is an interesting http://www.stripes.com/report-pentagon-to-destroy-1b-in-ammunition-1.280372 that ought to make you see red. It sort of doesn't matter how you slice this, it's grotesque.

On the one hand, one can seriously ask why this much ammo is being "destroyed". The services have never had enough ammo to really get to train as they would like. Certainly many of the non-combat units would like to be proficient with small arms, yet often there isn't an ammo allotment available to give them this opportunity.

On the other hand, ?why wouldn't this be SOLD. If it really is "excess", then it ought to be sold to the American people, who would be glad to have the opportunity to purchase this ammo, hopefully at somewhat of a discount.

There have been reports (on the intrawebz, fwiw) that a large percentage of the "excess" ammo is 5.56 SS109 rounds. That's the same stuff you can buy at WallyMart (if you're lucky) for a pretty penny.

As an Official US Government Tax Payer, I'd love to buy that surplus ammo; even when I'd be paying for it twice.

I hope the NRA, GOA, etc. jump on this with both boots.

SS109 has proven not that effective against the ragheads, as it was meant to defeat Russian armor. But it is still great stuff for target shooting. And it's nice to have that kind of ammo - just in case.

This is a lot like Garands or M14's - which the gummint has but refuses to sell us. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to own ANYTHING as a citizen and end all this silly record keeping.

Dev, does the 5.56 bullet (55 or 62 grains) tend to over-penetrate the human torso? Through and through? Say at 25, 100 or 200 meters?

The old FMJ's didn't. But the SS109 has a steel core aimed at penetrating the body armor. IT would whistle through the ragheads, so you ended up having to shoot them a bunch of times. Indeed, it WAS the norm that to take down an enemy you should hit him twice. But with the SS109's you seemed to need at least 4 hits, and in a combat environment you don't generally get that much of a window to hit them.

Sad that our govt can be so stupid sometimes... and WE pay for their mistakes.
