    AM-BEE-DEX-TRUSS not AM-BEE-DEX-TREE-US

Post by sharpenit on Sun May 18, 2014 6:50 am

    Doc:

Few people in the gun community seem to be able to pronounce the world "ambidextrous" properly. They want to add an extra syllable. I noticed you do this on your most recent episode. Jake Challand over on Firearms Radio Network does it constantly.

The word has four syllables, not five.

      It is AM-BEE-DEX-TRUSS not AM-BEE-DEX-TREE-US.

Don't believe me? Check with some "professional gun writers," if you know any. Even long-haired professional gun writers will tell you that I am correct.

      Love your show.

    You are correct.
I have always been aware of the correct pronunciation and spelling of it.
It is a regional colloquialism around here... similar to "lever." Everyone around here says it the same way. I polled folks I work with to say the word when I showed it to them on a piece of paper. Not one of them pronounced it truss, all pronounced treeus. Even with the correct spelling right before their eyes.
Thanks for listening to the show, and joining the forum!

Yeah, the King's English is almost alive and well in North Carolina, while here in Tennessee it's dead and gone. Round here, you'll find people who pronounce it with six syllables:

    "A-YUM-BEE-DEX-TREE-YUS."

Brings to mind the comment of a Johnny Reb from Hill's Corps when suddenly the Iron Brigade waded in on McPherson's Ridge on Day 1 (?need I ID the battle to any of you Rebs there).

I do enjoy you needling AJ and Grant with your pronunciation of "lever."

Although that official Presidential portrait you're using for an avatar is a bit off-putting.
